Tyson Library Volunteers

Tyson Library welcomes volunteers to assist in various library-related activities.

  • Volunteers are friends of the library who share their enthusiasm for books, and cultural and educational activities.

What can a volunteer do? Volunteers can help at the front desk or get involved with library projects such as book sales, receptions, and programs for children and adults. More details on volunteer opportunities are listed below.

How much time does it take to volunteer? Individuals may volunteer any amount of time at their convenience. Volunteering for the library can be at a set time and number of hours or can be flexible according to the volunteer's and library's schedule. The library will work with volunteers to match schedules to everyone's benefit, during regular library hours.

How can I volunteer? Review the list of volunteer opportunities, below, then complete a volunteer form at the library or click on this link to print a volunteer registration form.

What if I'm unsure of what to do?  Training will be provided. Volunteers are trained to know the library and to provide basic assistance to patrons. Computer training can be commensurate with the interest of the volunteer. Don't be afraid! The staff is here to help.

Volunteer Opportunities

Book sale – This annual event raises funds to support the activities of the library volunteers. Volunteers for the book sale help prepare books for sale, set-up the sale, handle day-of-sale activities, and clean up.

Receptions – Receptions are held throughout the year to support and promote library activities such as National Library Week, holiday festivities, etc. Volunteers for receptions assist in planning, preparing refreshments and/or handling catering, set-up, hosting, and clean up.

Children's programs – Various programs are held throughout the year to promote reading and children's activities at the library. Volunteers for children's programs assist the library staff with children during programs. Volunteers also help with publicity, set-up, and clean up for these activities.

Adult programs – Various programs are held throughout the year to promote reading and adult programs at the library. Volunteers for adult programs assist the library staff with publicity, planning, and hosting programs such as book discussions, art displays or other adult presentations.

Administration – Volunteers can work at the front desk assisting patrons, answering the phone, or assisting the library staff in activities relating to publicity and record keeping.

Gardening – To enhance the overall library environment, volunteers provide help throughout the year to prepare library grounds for Spring, Summer and Fall, including planting flowers, planting bulbs and other garden activities.
