The Facts:

Many children graduate from high school with inadequate reading and writing skills.

Did you know 1 in 5 American adults - 20% - are functionally illiterate? Studies indicate 13% of American adults do not read at all or fall below the 4th grade level.

Indiana’s illiteracy rate is only slightly better than the national average. But only slightly. People who lack the basics of reading and writing cannot compete successfully for jobs and other opportunities.

Our Mission:

Identify adults with reading needs, whether it is basic reading or a need to prepare for a
GED-based program!

Train tutors to be volunteers of purpose!

Help students to become self-sufficient making life better for the adult learner!

Help us teach. We will be looking for competent people who can volunteer an hour or so a week to act as tutors. We will provide basic training.

Help us find the people who need help. Many people who struggle with literacy are embarrassed and reluctant to ask for help. It is nothing to be ashamed about. Do you know someone who needs our help? The program will be personalized and confidential. A willing person can make significant progress. And, they will always be grateful to the person who taught them.

ALL of us can make a difference!

We would like to give a special "Thank You" to all of those who participated in Tutor Training!

Congratulations to Freda Hensley, door prize winner courtesy of Napoleon State Bank.
