Library Districts
Indiana has 239 recognized library districts - one of these
is Tyson Library. The Indiana State Library recognizes Tyson's
district as Johnson Township in Ripley County, along with
the townships of Brown, Otter Creek and Shelby,
which have an agreement with Tyson to provide library services.
(See map)
Also in Ripley County are
- Osgood Public Library, serving Center, Franklin, Delaware,
and Washington Townships
- Batesville Memorial Library, serving the city of Batesville
and most of Laughrey township
Adams and Jackson townships in Ripley County
have no recognized library district, as the residents in these
two townships do not pay a library tax.
While this may be interesting why is it important?
Indiana law (IC 36-12-2-25(c)) requires a library district
to charge a non-resident fee to those who do not live within
the limits of the recognized library district. This being fair
to equalize what residents pay for library service with those
non-residents. |
|
Because of this requirement, Tyson Library currently charges a
non-resident fee of $31.00. Thus, anyone residing outside of Brown,
Johnson, Shelby and Otter Creek townships must pay
$31.00 for a new, or renewal, library card.
For residents of Brown, Johnson, Shelby and Otter
Creek townships there is no change in the cost of a new or
renewed card.
What are the options for those living outside
of Tyson Library's district to get a library card?
- If you live outside of Brown, Johnson, Shelby, or
Otter Creek townships you can obtain a Tyson Library card
for $31.00.
- If you live in Center, Delaware, Franklin, or Washington
townships you can obtain a free card at the Osgood/Milan Library.
- If you live in Batesville city limits or in part of
Laughrey township you can obtain a free card at Batesville
Memorial Public Library.
- If you live in Adams or Jackson townships,
or outside of Ripley County, you can obtain a library card at
any of the above libraries by paying the library's non-resident
fee - Tyson Library $31.00, Osgood $34.00, Batesville $73.00.
- Any Indiana resident can purchase a Public Library Access
Card (PLAC) for $50.00 at any Indiana Library. However, the PLAC
purchaser must have a valid library card at their "home"
library. If the purchaser does not have a home library, they
will need to purchase a non-resident card in addition to the
PLAC.
How about Children's cards?
Children's cards at Tyson Library remain free, for those living
within Brown, Johnson, Shelby or Otter Creek townships
OR those living within the South Ripley School District.
Children who reside outside of the library's district or who
are not within the South Ripley School district would have to
pay the non-resident fee.
This information the transition to Evergreen Indiana
and Library Districts is a lot to digest. Please stop by the library,
or contact us, if we can answer any questions.
